He takes the name Don Quixote, dons an old suit of armor, chooses a scrawny horse named Rocinante, and appoints a farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire. Together they ride through the countryside to do good and fight injustice.
But Don Quixote does not see the world as it is, but as it is in the books. He mistakes windmills for evil giants and innkeepers for castle lords. Sancho often tries to bring him to his senses, but remains faithfully by his side nonetheless. Time and again, the two find themselves in strange and comical situations. Don Quixote is often mocked, but remains convinced of his chivalric ideal.
The novel humorously illustrates how dreams clash with reality. It pokes fun at old heroic novels, but also tells a story of friendship, courage, and the desire to make the world a better place.
