What Display Is Actually Saying
Display follows a young man whose experimentation with altered states begins to undermine something he had always taken for granted: that the world he sees is reality itself. Hallucinations, waking dreams and persistent changes in perception lead him to question where experience actually exists. If the brain receives signals and constructs everything we see, hear and feel, then perhaps the world appearing before us is not reality itself, but a representation created within consciousness.
This becomes the central idea behind the title. Like a computer, the brain can be thought of as hardware, the mind as software, and conscious experience as the display. The colours, objects, sounds and physical world we experience appear on this internal display, but they are not necessarily the underlying reality that produces them. As the narrator pushes further into this idea, the boundary between perception, imagination, dreams and reality becomes increasingly uncertain-and his search for understanding becomes increasingly dangerous.
Ultimately, Display asks a deceptively simple question: what is experience actually made of? The narrator comes to see physical reality as the presentation of something deeper and non-physical-ideas, imagination or consciousness taking form as the world we experience. What begins as experimentation with drugs becomes a philosophical journey into perception itself, asking whether the solid external world we assume we inhabit may instead be the display through which something far more fundamental is experienced.
