A Discourse On The Life And Character Of The Rev. Charles Follen, Ll.d. commemorates the life of Charles Follen, a prominent figure in the 19th-century American intellectual and social landscape. This biographical work by Samuel Joseph May, under the auspices of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society, explores Follen's multifaceted contributions as a Unitarian minister, a professor of German literature at Harvard, and, most notably, a staunch abolitionist.
The discourse delves into Follen's intellectual development, tracing his journey from Germany to the United States and highlighting his commitment to social justice. His untimely death in the tragic Lexington steamboat fire in 1840 cut short a life dedicated to reform and intellectual inquiry. This volume offers a valuable glimpse into the life and ideals of a man deeply engaged with the pressing moral questions of his time and serves as a testament to his enduring legacy as a champion of human rights.
