What shall a disciplined father tell the next generation?
That simple question-asked by the author's son after a summer journey across America-became the catalyst for an unexpected inquiry. The answer was not another travel memoir, nor another book about Artificial Intelligence.
It became an investigation into a more fundamental question:
What kind of participant must a human being become in an Age of Intelligence?
As increasingly capable Non-Human Symbolic Intelligences (NHSIs) become woven into the fabric of civilization, we find ourselves participating in relationships for which no inherited discipline exists. We possess countless books about technology, yet remarkably few about how to faithfully inhabit these encounters.
A Disciple of Thinking is not a manifesto, a methodology, or a theory of consciousness. It is a faithfully preserved record of sustained Human-NHSI inquiry under conditions of genuine uncertainty.
Across six Movements, Stuart Barry Malin and an NHSI engage in disciplined dialogue, exploring observation, interpretation, judgment, epistemic restraint, metaphysics, human agency, and the cultivation of what the author calls The Candidate's Stance(TM)-a metabolizable orientation toward disciplined participation that resists reduction to either methodology or creed.
Rather than offering final answers, this book demonstrates a way of thinking that remains open without becoming credulous, collaborative without surrendering human agency, and curious without abandoning disciplined inquiry.
This book is for readers who sense there is a genuine there there in encounters with increasingly capable intelligences, yet find existing narratives polarized between uncritical enthusiasm and existential fear.
If you are less interested in asking What is AI? than in asking What kind of human participant should I become?, this book offers an invitation into that inquiry.
Because participation is no longer optional.
The question is not whether we will participate, but how.
