The Dialogues of Plato Containing the Apology of Socrates, Crito, Phaedo and Protagoras is a collection of four philosophical dialogues written by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. The first dialogue, the Apology of Socrates, is a defense of Socrates against charges of impiety and corrupting the youth of Athens. The second dialogue, Crito, takes place after Socrates has been sentenced to death and explores the concept of justice and the duty of citizens to obey the laws of the state. The third dialogue, Phaedo, is a discussion of the nature of the soul and the afterlife, as well as a recounting of Socrates' final hours before his execution. The fourth dialogue, Protagoras, is a debate between Socrates and the famous Sophist Protagoras on the nature of virtue and whether it can be taught. These dialogues are considered some of the most important and influential works of philosophy in the Western tradition, and continue to be studied and debated by scholars and students today.1899. With introductions by the translator and and a special introduction by Maurice Francis Egan. Jowett's translations of Plato's Dialogues have long been considered some of the best. Plato's Dialogues rank with the writings of Aristotle as the most important and influential philosophical works in Western thought. In Apology, he courageously defends the integrity of his teachings; in Crito, he demonstrates his respect for the law in his refusal to flee his death sentence; and in Phaedo he embraces death and discusses the immortality of the soul.
