The Devil Passes is a compelling and thought-provoking play by Benn W. Levy that explores the complexities of human morality through the lens of divine and diabolical intervention. Set within a sophisticated social gathering, the plot centers on the arrival of a mysterious curate, Reverend Nicholas Lucy, who appears to be the Devil in a modern guise. Lucy challenges a group of disillusioned guests by offering them the opportunity to fulfill their deepest, most cynical desires, effectively tempting them to abandon their ethical principles for personal gain.
As each character confronts the reality of their choices, the play delves into the persistence of conscience and the unintended presence of goodness in the human soul. Levy blends sharp wit with theological inquiry, creating a satirical yet profound examination of faith and virtue. The Devil Passes remains a significant work of early 20th-century British drama, noted for its clever dialogue and its unique approach to the traditional morality play. This gripping drama provides a nuanced look at the eternal struggle between good and evil, questioning whether humanity is truly as fallen as it often believes itself to be.
