What if reading this book could save a life?

Growing up on the Arabian Peninsula left a deep impression on Richard, as did reading the accounts of early British explorers in Arabia. But when his mother was missed by an NHS cancer screening programme - and he discovered countless others had been too - he could not stand idly by. Driven by duty, he set out to change the system.

Ultimately feeling powerless to influence the NHS, he sought absolution for that failure by walking alone into the Rub al Khali, the Empty Quarter; the world's largest sand desert. His journey became one of survival, reflection and ultimately another powerless struggle against the authorities, mirroring his experiences with the NHS.
