Thursday evening in Rosewick Bay usually means three things: books, pastries, and at least one person who's far too convinced they've already figured out who the killer is by page twelve.
But when a member of the local book club is found dead shortly after the meeting, the evening loses its cozy atmosphere for good.
Mabel Hart, owner of the small bookstore Hart & Halloway, should really have her hands full selling bestsellers, saving the coffee shop, and keeping her grandmother Beatrice from psychologically analyzing customers without being asked. Instead, she suddenly finds herself in the middle of a real murder case.
Because the victim left clues behind.
An old brass key number. Strange page numbers. A missing notebook. A book that apparently knows more than its readers. And several highly suspicious book club members, all of whom have good reasons not to tell the whole truth.
While Detective Inspector Nathan Cole is increasingly convinced that Mabel should stay out of his investigation, Mabel is increasingly convinced that Nathan desperately needs to do a better job investigating.
And then it turns out that the murder may be just the latest chapter in a story that has been carefully hidden between the lines in Rosewick Bay for years.
It's just too bad that someone clearly doesn't want Mabel to read to the end.
A humorous cozy mystery full of books, red herrings, small-town British chaos, and the important lesson that you should never trust a book club once real bodies start turning up.
