《麦苗青菜花黄》这本书史料丰富翔实。为了写这本书，作者收集了包括数以百万字历史档案的大量史料，采访了数以百计的亲身经历过那段历史的各级干部和群众。其中有些重要的当事人，因为和作者本来就熟悉，或者和作者的父亲是旧交，故而对作者可以推心置腹，无话不谈。另外，作者酝酿写这本书是在上世纪80年代，那时候很多重要的当事人还健在。这就使得此书在拥有史料方面具有他人（包括后来人）难以企及的优势。
《麦苗青菜花黄》一书的写作风格自成一体。作者笔触所及，上自中央大政，下至基层所为；上至伟大领袖的指点江山，天马行空，下至省、地、县、社、队各级干部的所作所为，以及黎民百姓的起伏命运；不但写到政治、经济，而且还写到文化与社会生活，包括社会氛围，一般人的精神风貌，生活习俗，以及歌曲民谣、民间的顺口溜和牢骚怪话，等等。场面宏大而又描写细腻，称得上是对那个时代的一个全景式描绘。
