Patrick Brennan came to Hawthorne County looking for quiet.
After eighteen years with the NYPD and one night he cannot leave behind, Brennan trades New York streets for the back roads, farms and close-knit communities of rural North Carolina. At first, his new life seems almost impossibly peaceful-minor thefts, neighbour disputes, traffic stops and the everyday problems of a place where everyone knows everyone.
Then the Iron Saints arrive.
The motorcycle club claims it wants nothing more than a clubhouse, a bar and somewhere to call home. But Brennan has spent too long watching people to ignore the details that don't fit: unfamiliar vehicles moving at night, frightened witnesses, drugs reaching local teenagers and violence beginning to creep into a county that insists nothing happens there.
Working alongside investigator Lena Park and a sheriff's department unused to organised crime, Brennan begins following seemingly unconnected incidents toward something far larger than a local biker gang.
Because Hawthorne County isn't isolated.
It's useful.
And the quiet roads Brennan hoped would help him escape his past may be exactly what criminals need to hide theirs. The manuscript develops the investigation from the Saints' apparently lawful presence into drugs, suspicious transport movements and an increasingly interstate organised-crime problem.
