He has seventy-two seconds to save a ship he doesn't remember boarding.

A man wakes on the deck of the Edict of Silence with fire-suppressant foam in his lungs, a scorched neural port at the base of his skull, and no memory of who he is. An anti-matter containment breach is counting down in the corner of his vision. His body saves the ship before his mind can ask why it knows how-for four hours, anyway. He hasn't fixed the reactor. He's only asked it to wait.

The crew did not survive whatever came aboard. Neither did the explanation. He walks among the flawless dead. The captain sits upright in his command chair, his skull intact and his mind liquefied. Four soldiers stand frozen mid-stride in a hallway at two hundred and seventy degrees below zero. A doctor hangs in a stasis field, one millimeter into a blink he will never finish.

There is no hull breach. There is no blood. There is one active biological signature aboard, and it is his. Then something out there starts calling for help.

Two point eight kilometers off the starboard bow, a distress beacon is broadcasting from a ship that shouldn't be there. Inside it, a woman is freezing to death in the dark, and she needs an engineer.

He is, apparently, an engineer. He is also wearing the uniform of a House that starves entire colonies from an office, carrying an obsolete bullet with somebody's dried blood on it, and standing in a tomb where every door opened for his credentials. Before this is over, he will learn exactly what he is. And he will not be allowed to keep it.

COLD BOOT is the first book of The Telluric Mandate, a hard-edged space opera thriller with cyberpunk teeth: corporate empires, engineered loyalty, and the things people do to survive between the rocks.

Content warning: This book features mature themes, intense body horror, and unapologetic, gritty violence.
