When high school student Nelson Sonny Grey is shot and killed just as the morning bell rings, Sergeant Cat Carmichael and her team are called to investigate his murder.

As they interview his friends, they soon find out that Sonny worked at a local bakery run by his girlfriend's mom, had a wild side in the bedroom, and sold drugs on school grounds.

Once they start looking into the bakery Sonny worked at, they realize that Sarah from Aunt Sarah's Bakery is really Sarah Malloy, US Senator Pauline Adams' double. And one phone call to Senator Adams sends FBI Agents Julie Rhodes and Tim Johnson to the fifteenth precinct to interfere with the investigation.

Meanwhile, the team celebrates an engagement announcement, sparks fly for two of the team members as they each meet possible love interests, and Cat must learn to navigate a new dynamic in her home.

Cat and Forrest, who are still settling into a new groove back as partners, must wade through the nuances of politics and high school gossip to try to unravel one of the most convoluted plots they've ever encountered all in the days leading into a Presidential election in this twelfth book in the Cat Carmichael detective series.
