The sailing vessel Alerte was a 56-ton yawl used by E.F. Knight for a legendary 1889 expedition to the remote island of Trindade, in the South Atlantic, off the coast of Brazil, for a private expedition to find buried pirate treasure. The Alerte was designed for long-distance ocean voyaging crewed mostly by amateurs and she proved to be an exceptionally sturdy craft, despite the inevitably harsh conditions of the ocean. The principal account in this book, published in 1890, is considered a classic of maritime literature. The adventurers spent months vainly digging for treasure, though the book naturally focusses on their many nautical challenges and their dealings with the island's hostile conditions. The expedition ultimately failed to find the gold, but it brought about one of the most authentic and well-written real-life treasure island stories published. The author, Edward Frederick Knight, was a British barrister, correspondent, and yachtsman who wrote in a practical, and detailed style that resonated with serious sailors. Knight wrote several other influential books concerning sailing voyages, though the second work by E.F. Knight in this Leonaur edition is titled simply, 'Sailing' and is a comprehensive instructional manual that became a standard reference for decades.
