Founded around 1790, Cortébert is one of the oldest names in Swiss watchmaking - and one of the most quietly consequential. It made its own movements for the better part of two centuries, supplied calibres to the young Rolex (the Rolex 618 was derived from the Cortébert 616), introduced a jump-hour design later taken up by IWC, and saw one of its movements reproduced in the Soviet Union as the long-lived Molnija. It clothed the British army's wrists under the wartime ATP programme, and sold into Fascist Italy under the Perseo name. Then the quartz crisis came, and the market forgot all of it.
