Excerpt: ...Of the four Presbyterian ministers, one is superannuated and without a charge the other three aTe obliged to teach schools to support their families; so that the whole work of their ministry consists merely in preaching on the Sabbath. It must be confessed that every part of this Territory is a field for missionary labor, and it is thought that a few societies and churches might be organized, and that a zealous, faithful preacher, of engaging address, -would obtaiu a handsome support. The five counties last named constitute the Mobile district. 30 -i The state of society in this Territory is trttly deplorable. Most of the emigrants to this countrj came h--e, ior the-purpose of amassing wealth, and that object seems to hav- absorbed their souls. The schools are few and, indifferent. At Washington is a College endowed with a large tract of land, but its hxviue ismall. One of the Presbyterian ministers has the charge of it. A Bible Society has lately been organized at Natchez, is patronized by the influential men in the Territory, and promises utility. INDIANA TERRITORY. The soil of this territory is, in general, very excellent, particularly on the waters of the Big Miami, and White River, tne Wabash and its tributary streams. The poorest-!.jiid. 1: tl.is Teritory, is between the falls of Ohio and Anderson Rivers, V'..g chiefly a hard gravelly soil, timbered with o ik of sni!l grovth. The land between Anderson and Saline Rivers is chi; fly good, but its situation, in general, is unhealthy. The best i;mis in litis territory are still claimed by the Indians.
