A diner baker with a grant. A small-town lawyer backing her. One theater back room with a brand-new lock.

Sammy Baker, Diner Baker and Amateur Sleuth. Sammy bakes for the diner she lives above in Sunny Cove, and she has finally won the grant to open Sunny Cove Services for Austin and men like him. She wants the doors open and the town behind her. Her contractor Harold Woodland is dead on the workroom floor the morning of the opening party.

Sheriff Jones, Sunny Cove Sheriff. Sheriff Jones has found Sammy in the middle of his cases before, and this time she found the body. He wants her to leave the case to his officers. Sammy keeps a list of names, and she has never taken his advice.

Sammy hired Harold over half the town's advice, and now the workshop she built for Austin is the address where a man died. Three contractors wanted that job. Leave it to the sheriff and Sunny Cove Services opens under a shadow.

Taking cookies and condolences to the widow was the right thing to do. It was also the last place Sammy should have been.
