Congo Song is a novel by South African author Stuart Cloete. The book is set in the Belgian Congo during the early 20th century and follows the story of a young man named Pieter van Vlaanderen. Pieter is a white man who was born and raised in the Congo and has a deep connection to the land and its people. However, as tensions rise between the Belgian colonizers and the Congolese people, Pieter finds himself torn between his loyalty to the Congo and his ties to the white community.Throughout the novel, Pieter navigates the complex political and social landscape of the Congo, struggling to reconcile his love for the land with the injustices committed by the Belgian colonizers. He falls in love with a Congolese woman named Ntombi, but their relationship is threatened by the racial prejudices of the time. Pieter also becomes involved in a rebellion against the Belgian authorities, and must choose between fighting for his beliefs and protecting his loved ones.Congo Song is a powerful and emotional exploration of colonialism, identity, and love. Cloete's vivid descriptions of the Congo landscape and the people who inhabit it bring the story to life, while his nuanced portrayal of Pieter's internal struggles makes the novel a compelling read. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
