Congo Song is a novel by South African author Stuart Cloete. Set in the Belgian Congo during the 1950s, the book tells the story of a young woman named Louise de Kock who travels to the Congo to join her husband, a mining engineer. However, upon arriving in the country, Louise discovers that her husband has been killed in a mining accident. As she tries to come to terms with her loss, Louise becomes increasingly drawn to the vibrant and complex world of the Congo. She befriends a variety of characters, including a local woman named Mwana who becomes her closest confidante, and a group of white expatriates who are struggling to find their place in a country that is rapidly changing. As Louise navigates the challenges of life in the Congo, she also finds herself confronting her own prejudices and assumptions about race and culture. Through her experiences, she begins to see the beauty and complexity of the country and its people, and ultimately finds a sense of purpose and belonging in this new and unfamiliar world.Congo Song is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that explores themes of loss, love, and identity in the context of a rapidly changing and often tumultuous society. Cloete's vivid descriptions of the Congo and its people bring the story to life, and his nuanced portrayal of the characters and their relationships makes for a compelling and engaging read. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
