Over the years, Eunice's vindictive cruelty had affected members of the Deer Creek Garden Club and the rival Garden Club of St. James, as well as the mayor, the police and the Department of Public Works of Deer Creek. Grace Mere and Ivy Wilcoxen of the Deer Creek Garden Club decide to investigate Eunice's murder after the arrest of Dash Lethaby, whom they believe to be innocent. Their quest reveals the quirks, foibles, misunderstandings and sometimes the downright silliness of small town life. It also shows the good intentions, kindness and humor that can be found in life everywhere.
