A bearing four centuries old. An island that remembers. A man who has been walking the same paths for a thousand years.
The wind on the porch at Annaberg is light from the south on a cool October afternoon when Dr. Iris Lettsome - epigrapher, ethnobotanist, St. Thomas-raised reader of stones - accepts a cup of bush tea and a small consulting question about a wall. A grandmother at Coral Bay has a story her own grandmother gave her in the summer of nineteen forty-eight. A flamboyán tree at the bend in the path remembers a man it saw three times. By the time Iris steps off that porch the line has chosen her.
A copper-alloy disc cut at Mary Point in the spring of fifteen ninety-three points at a cay across the night water. The Casa Verde Heritage Trust - a Sevilla foundation whose patient predecessors have been hunting this disc for four hundred and eighty-five years - gets there twelve minutes ahead of her. A senior operative named Marco Reyes lifts a lamp at the cave mouth at the bottom of a rope and offers her a clean trade. By the time the lamp goes out a man named Albert Henley is dead in his bed at Coral Bay, a National Park ranger named Linda Adler is sitting at a picnic table at Cinnamon Bay with a folder Iris was not supposed to see for another week, and a small boat is running for Norman Island under the wrong lights.
On the windward side of Norman Island, at the entrance to Privateer Bay, a chart Iris's grandmother taught her to read at the age of seven shows a survey line forty-seven feet northwest of the point Iris would have plotted alone. A man stands under the seagrape above the cove who looks at her once and walks away - and who will appear, in the count of the next eight weeks, two more times: at distances measured in meters, in two different sets of clothes, with the same scar above his right eye and the same single nod.
Five nodes across the Virgin Islands. Each node a marker, a window, and a key fragment. Each demanding the next.
At Salt River Bay on the north shore of St. Croix, at the place a TaÃno behique named Guarionex cut a slab on the western wing of the cove in fourteen ninety-three, the bearing closes - and points off-island, off-saga, twelve hundred miles southwest at a town an empire would not learn to name until eighteen twenty-two.
Iris has Kwame Cudjoe, a Maroon-descended historian who has been waiting his whole life for the line to come to his grandmother's porch. She has the disc, the cord with twenty-seven logarithmic knots, the chart from Annaberg, and the seven-mile bearing across the cove at noon. The Casa Verde foundation has a principal at Sevilla named Augusto Ribero who is, by the morning of the eighteenth of October, no longer the principal of the foundation. It has an uncle in Sintra who countermands the standing instruction of eighteen eighty-three. It has a senior security director named Catalina Vázquez who walks out of the office at the Calle de los Almirantes at four in the morning with twenty-three sealed boxes the foundation will not see again. And on a small dirt path coming up from Salt River cove at four minutes past five on the late afternoon of the sixteenth of December two thousand and twenty-six, it has - between the dry bench above the alluvial plain and the small dip in the path - a man with white hair under a straw hat and a single nod.
The Compass of Salt River opens The Island of Bones - a nine-volume Caribbean treasure-hunt thriller about a chain of keepers who have been carrying a single bearing across five hundred years, and the institutions that have spent five centuries trying to bury it.
The slab opens. The bearing reads. The map is older than the empire that drew it.
