Excerpt: ... September 23d. Colonel James Stewart, Jr., returned to regiment, and took command. Surgeon A. W. Woodhull joined regiment, taking charge; Ass't Surgeon John M. Davies married with Miss Eliza Allen, at Newborn. September 24th. The 158th New York left, and the Ninth immediately took their camp and quarters, engaging in the usual company and battalion exercises. September 25th. Inspection. September 27th. Ass't Surgeon F. B. Gillette ordered to report to Surgeon in charge of Mansfield general hospital, at Morehead t City; in the afternoon Company G left for Bogue Sound, to report to Lieut. W. McCherry, for garrison-duty. September 28th. Lieut. Col. Curlies, who had been absent, sick, since May 12th, returned to the regiment, still using his crutches. October 11th. The regiment was paid off, the men not having been paid in from 8 to 12 months. Upon our return to North Carolina, it was found that at Newbern the fearful scourge of yellow-fever was raging. At the time it seemed impossible, satisfactorily, to account for its appearance here, but it was subsequently found out, as the whole world now knows, that we were indebted for this visitation to the infernal machinations of the rebel government, sanctioned by its leaders, and accomplished by the devilish ingenuity of Dr. Blackburn, who introduced trunks, filled with infected clothing, to be distributed in Newbern. The hellish plot too well succeeded, but it was upon the citizens that the plague chiefly worked. The soldiers were, of course, seriously affected by the epidemic, but at least nine-tenths of the deaths occurred among the citizens.
