Lingchi Xue, a writer and journalist in the Lingchi region, is the embodiment of the region's conscience. He investigates the origins and course of the Communist Virus epidemic sweeping the region and writes this novel-a work capable of standing beside any great work of world literature. In his struggle against Wang Jiquan, his tongue is cut out and his wife is brutally killed. Yet amid the contamination of the collective unconscious, he persists in recording the history of evil in Lingchi and in scrutinizing and re-evaluating the values of its five-thousand-year history.
