Justus Freiherr (Baron) von Liebig (born 12 May 1803 - died 18 April 1873) was a renowned German chemist who made significant contributions to inorganic, organic, and agricultural chemistry. Liebig's work at the University of Giessen in Germany led to the development of modern teaching methods based on experimental laboratory-oriented work. This earned him recognition as one of the greatest chemistry teachers of all time. He is often referred to as the father of the fertilizer industry from his seminal contributions on nitrogen and trace minerals as essential plant nutrients.
