In the spring of 5 BCE, a comet appeared in the constellation Capricornus and remained visible for over seventy days. Chinese court astronomers recorded it in nine characters of classical Chinese. No one else wrote it down. Not the Romans. Not the Greeks. Not Josephus. Not a single astronomer in Alexandria. For two thousand years, those nine characters were the only surviving evidence that the object had ever existed.
Then, in 2025, a NASA planetary scientist computed its orbit and discovered something extraordinary: the comet had passed within one lunar distance of Earth. It was on a near-collision course. A fractional difference in trajectory would have produced an impact carrying energy comparable to the asteroid that ended the age of dinosaurs.
This book follows the cross-domain investigation that began with that orbital reconstruction and led, through Chinese philology, Babylonian cuneiform tablets, Greek textual analysis, Greenland ice cores, and Newtonian gravitational mechanics, to a conclusion that no single discipline could have reached alone: the Star of Bethlehem may have been the closest brush with extinction in recorded human history. The meteor storm it produced is consistent with the shepherds' account in Luke. The title given to the child born that night-Saviour-was the standard word for one who delivers from physical destruction. And the planetary conjunction that the Magi read as a sign may have been, through Jupiter's gravity, the very mechanism that aimed the comet at Earth-and determined that it would miss.
