The global government tells people they aren't in danger and not to worry but these two young men don't believe anything the government says. They are best friends, genius students at the science academy, and are secretly building two spaceships while continuing to attend classes at school so their other activities won't be noticed. The work has to be done in secret because the government will put a stop to everything if they are detected. They convince scientists and others to join them to work on various projects and all will be on the two ships when they leave. When the two ships finally launch, they learn that leaving their planet was easy compared to the unfriendly wormholes, mechanical failures, and aliens with giant warships that they encounter in their travels.
