This book is about what happens when the collective unconscious meets the global network. It is about how something that Jung could only see in myth, religion, and the recurring dreams of his patients has now been, in a sense, made visible - externalized into servers, algorithms, trending topics, and viral content. The internet did not create the collective psyche. But it may have given it a body.
Every day, billions of human minds pour their fears, desires, fantasies, and compulsions into the digital commons. Platforms harvest that material, reflect it back, and amplify whatever provokes the strongest response. Outrage. Longing. Tribal belonging. The shadow. These are not new forces - Jung wrote about every one of them. What is new is the speed, the scale, and the fact that for the first time in history, we have built a machine that runs, in part, on the unconscious.
And now, into this already charged space, we have introduced artificial intelligence: systems trained on the totality of human expression, capable of generating language, images, and ideas with uncanny fluency. If the networked world resembles a collective dream, then AI is something stranger still - a dreamer that has consumed all our dreams and is beginning to dream on its own.
You do not need to be a psychologist to read this book, and you do not need to be a technologist either. The author doesn't intend so. You need only be someone who lives in the networked world and has occasionally sensed that something about it - something beneath the noise - is not quite understood. That sense is correct.
