He claimed to have acted in a fit of blind rage that had led to the fatal blow, but he didn't kill Christine. It was self-defense, he explained, barely able to articulate the chaotic events of that terrible night.

The story of the fire emerged, a desperate attempt to destroy evidence and to silence witnesses, to cover up everything he'd done to protect Christine. He confessed to destroying the evidence in the pickup, to attempting to cover his tracks with the mud, but the truck still held microscopic evidence from the crime scene. He had, he confessed, set fire to Turk's house, thinking it was empty and that this would be the ultimate end.

The confession wasn't clean, it was fragmented, filled with gaps and inconsistencies. But Kyle felt a chilling realization - this was not a calculated crime, but one born of rage, of desperation, of a lifetime of pain. Silas's story, despite its flaws, filled some of the gaps in the investigation. It provided a motive, a plausible explanation for the events that unfolded that night. However, the absence of a clear motive for Christine's murder cast a shadow on his narrative. It was obvious that Silas's account of the events required further investigation.

Kyle let Silas talk, letting the torrent of confession wash over him. The truth, Kyle suspected, would unearth even more dark secrets hidden within this sleepy Southern town.
