STEPHANIE Milton wore nothing but her scanty lingerie and a pair of worn-off shoes. Carrying a heavy metallic box with a rare golden glow, she stood facing the setting sun above the hills whence came a hundred men and women - the Children of Gods - running, shouting at her to stop, not to enter the enormous opening of the cave that stood behind her like a gigantic monster ready to swallow its prey. She had no choice but the cave that opened to the endless labyrinth with a thousand tunnels. She was their prisoner an hour ago.She was so distinguished a prisoner for them that they had made sure that she would not feel any discomfort in her prison. nor would she escape from her plush, cozy prison. They had made sure that she would not slip out through any of the doors, windows or holes, so, every time she was sent into the toilet, she was allowed to go in her scanty lingerie or in nothing. However, that was not the right way to fasten the cage-doors for a prisoner who had been the captain of one of America's most expensive space missions. She did neither bend the bars of the toilet-window nor squeeze through it. She worked her way through the wall where it had been damp, and damper inside. She had been in Washington a day ago - in the Security Vault - where two of her colleagues had been murdered and the third lay locked up in an adjacent apartment. Now, as she kept a safe distance from her captors, Stephanie didn't feel shy of running undraped but she was afraid of running into the labyrinth. Looking at the pink horizon above the hills, she studied the expanse of the world she was thrown in to complete her mission. In front of her a setting sun.Behind her the entrance of the labyrinth. On her right was the village of Coorg. On her left was the city of Palaghat. She made sure of the directions once again. As her captors were hardly less than fifty feet away, she walked into the cavernous mouth of the labyrinth, past the sleeping watchman with a long barreled rifle huddled in his hairy arms and an electric torch on the ledge of the cave's outer wall. For a while she paused and turned to the ledge and to the man for some dear things that she would need inside the cave. After five minutes, when the watchman awoke with some echoing footsteps farthest inside the cave, he sent out a shriek of alarm. Someone had dared to pinch his gun, torch and blanket.
