As competing prophets, spiritual performers, politicians, opportunists, soldiers, and ordinary settlers collide across Illinois and Missouri, the boundary between genuine faith and calculated fraud becomes increasingly difficult to see. Julius Toombs adds his own supernatural performances to the growing spectacle, while Silver dreams of establishing a city, a newspaper, a militia, and a following of believers.
Meanwhile, Elias Hart finds himself caught between loyalty to the man who gave him an opportunity and the troubling reality of what that opportunity requires.
