On November 17, 1978, twenty-year-old assistant manager Jayne Friedt and teenage employees Ruth Shelton, Daniel Davis and Mark Flemmonds were working the closing shift at a Burger Chef restaurant in Speedway, Indiana.
By shortly after midnight, the restaurant was empty.
The cash registers had been opened. Money was missing. Personal belongings had been left behind. Jayne's car had vanished.
And so had all four employees.
Two days later, the search ended in a wooded area in Johnson County.
What began as an apparent robbery had become one of Indiana's most haunting unsolved murder cases.
For nearly five decades, investigators have pursued witnesses, composite sketches, restaurant-robbery crews, suspicious confessions, lost evidence and possible suspects. One man even confessed before later withdrawing his statement. Yet no one has ever been convicted of the murders.
The Closing Shift reconstructs the case from the final hours inside Burger Chef through the search, the discovery of the victims, the investigative mistakes, the suspects, the disputed confessions and the modern theories that continue to surround the case.
At the centre of it all remain four young people who simply went to work one Friday night and never came home.
