This is a narrative nonfiction account of the parallel war fought by village militias, informers, proxy armies, spies, special forces and covert campaigns that officially never happened.
This book shows how the CIA created village republics in the countryside through pacification, local militias, and intelligence networks-and how those ally structures were used, subverted, and ultimately dismantled after 1975. It centers on Vietnamese agents, Montagnard and Nung fighters, radio operators, boat crews, and local families, alongside Australian, New Zealand, and British personnel who helped run America's secret war in Vietnam and operations across Southeast Asia.
The narrative then widens to the CIA-linked wars in Laos and Cambodia, the maritime raids and psychological operations against North Vietnam, and the internal battles between analysts and operators over the Diem coup, escalation, and Tet. It also details a mid-level officer's career, providing an inside view of how this system felt to the people who actually ran it, while a case study of the House of Ngo reveals how America tried to build-and then unbuild-a client regime.
