Christmas, A Happy Time by Alicia Catherine Mant is a heartwarming tale set in the early 19th century, focusing on the Mortimer family as they prepare for and celebrate Christmas. The story begins with Harriet and Elizabeth Mortimer eagerly awaiting the return of their brothers, John and Frederick, from school. The narrative captures the excitement and anticipation of the siblings as they prepare for the festive season, emphasizing the joy of family reunions. The Mortimer family, led by their kind and generous parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer, embodies the spirit of Christmas through acts of kindness and charity. They engage in various activities, such as preparing gifts and clothing for the less fortunate in their village, organizing a festive dinner for the local schoolchildren, and hosting a grand family gathering. The story also highlights the importance of obedience and safety, as demonstrated when the children refrain from skating on thin ice, heeding their father's advice. The narrative is rich with descriptions of the family's interactions, their preparations for Christmas, and the various traditions they uphold. Through these events, the story conveys themes of familial love, community spirit, and the joy of giving, making it a timeless tale that resonates with the essence of Christmas.
