The initial volume of the new biannual and peer-reviewed journal ChiMoKoJa - Histories of China, Mongolia, Korea, and Japan covers different aspects of East Asian history. The first chapter deals with the Russian East Asiatic Company in the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-5. Yukimura Sakon shows how far the war had changed the situation for Russian transatlantic liners in the years after 1905, particularly due to the East Asian events. In addition, the issue discusses the role of Japan during the early Cold War, as well as the interrelationship between gender and state in post-World War II Japan, when the image of women underwent a tremendous change. Frank Jacob analyses the role of Douglas MacArthur during post-war occupation and looks at the extent to which the Cold War was responsible for the political conditions and changes in the country. This is followed by Masako Endo's chapter, in which the social and gender impacts of the American occupation throughout the country are described in detail. In addition to the Japanese perspective of the first three contributions, Doris T. Chang and Richard Kagan provide a very interesting study of Chen Chu, Taiwan's female leader for human rights and political progress. The final section consists of reviews of publications that deal with East Asian history.
