- Something that is hoped for but illusory
Former police detective Liz Connelly and recently unseated MP Jack Emerson both need a fresh start. The two join forces as private investigators, but nothing prepares them for their first client-the plain-spoken and often tactless widow Elsie Cairns.
She is desperate to trace her adult son, Miles, reported missing after he failed to come home one night in Moorton, a run-down former mining town in North-East England.
Then she reveals 90,000 in cash hidden in his wardrobe.
At the same time, millions of pounds have gone missing from a company at the centre of Moorton's controversial redevelopment plans.
Then a body is found-murdered.
What begins as a missing-person enquiry soon draws Liz and Jack into a web of deception involving money, property and people with plenty to lose. As their investigation brings unsettling reminders of Liz's police past, the fledgling partners discover that in Moorton, respectable appearances can hide some very ugly truths.
Drawing on characters from the popular Moorton Community series, Chimera's Mask introduces the Moorton Detective Agency in a contemporary north-east mystery of dark humour, old enemies and unlikely allies, where nothing-and nobody-is quite what it seems.
