During a drought caused by a heatwave, two children experience dreams which lead them to an oak tree in a field on their auntie's farm where unbeknown to them, two cloud children are trapped. Despite their initial fear and the risks to themselves Matthew and Phoebe rescue the cloud children, and once they accept that Cirrus and Nimbus are real they then start to learn about the unseen world that exists in the clouds above them. However, Matthew and Phoebe soon realise that Cirrus and Nimbus must be returned to the clouds, otherwise they will be in danger from people who would exploit them, and from shadows in the ground that would try to absorb them. Matthew and Phoebe hatch a plot to release Cirrus and Nimbus into a waterfall, and under the watchful eyes of their Auntie Lyn they begin to discover themselves and fulfil their destiny.
