He kept all his medicines inside a gourd, and his ability to cure illnesses was truly miraculous. Even more astonishing was that every day after sunset, Master Gourd would vanish without a trace. One day, a man named Fei Changfang was drinking at a tavern across from Master Gourd's medicine stall. As dusk approached, he saw Master Gourd uncork the gourd, leap inside, and disappear. Fei Changfang was astonished - it turned out that Master Gourd was an immortal! Fei Changfang wanted to become Master Gourd's disciple. Every day, he came early to work at Master Gourd's medicine stall, and brought him delicious food and drink. Master Gourd realized that Fei Changfang was truly sincere in his desire to learn, so he took him into the gourd, where they entered a beautiful celestial palace, and Fei Changfang began to study under him. Later, Fei Changfang returned to his hometown, where he was able to cure all kinds of illnesses and possessed great skills. Subsequently, a man named Huan Jing came to study under Fei Changfang. One day, Fei Changfang said to Huan Jing, On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, disaster will strike your household. He then gave Huan Jing a packet of cornel (dogwood) leaves and a bottle of chrysanthemum wine, instructing him to take his fellow townspeople up to high ground to avoid the calamity. On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, Huan Jing led the townspeople up a nearby high mountain. Each person carried a small red pouch filled with cornel leaves hanging from their arm, and at the mountaintop, they shared and drank the chrysanthemum wine. From that time on, the customs of climbing to high places, wearing cornel leaves, and drinking chrysanthemum wine on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month have been passed down through the generations.
