This book was written in 1945 and is China's first modern war history novel. In the book, the famous battle of defending Changde is depicted directly. The 57th Division of the 74th Army, codenamed Tiger Ben, fought fiercely for more than ten days in the encirclement of more than 60000 Japanese soldiers, and fought bloody battles against the Japanese invaders to defend Changde. With a total of over 8000 soldiers, only 83 survived. The overall tone of the book is tragic, generous, and majestic.
本书作于1945年，是中国第一部现代战史小说。书中直面描写著名战役--常德保卫战的战况，代号虎贲'的七十四军五十七师在日军六万余人的包围中，苦战十余日，与日寇浴血奋战，才保卫住了常德。全师八千余人，最后仅有八十三人生还，全书基调悲昂慷慨、气壮山河。
