The people of Tianjin: assertive, sharp, competitive, witty, loyal, and deeply concerned with honor and appearance. The spirit of Tianjin: vibrant, robust, playful, tenacious, and full of flavor. Continuing the style of Mortals of the World Volumes I and II, this collection is composed of eighteen interconnected short stories depicting the local eccentrics and urban oddballs of old Tianjin. These are not elites, but ordinary people living amongst us-yet their words and deeds possess an extraordinary quality. As always, the author offers both praise and criticism for his characters. Their tenacious and rugged temperaments, with virtues and flaws intertwined, are deeply stamped with the imprint of regional culture, embodying the collective likes and dislikes of the local populace. With masterful storytelling and exquisitely concise prose, each tale leaves a lingering aftertaste.
