This book records the political, educational, philosophical, and ethical thoughts and views of Mencius and his disciples, as well as their political activities. It is one of the Thirteen Classics of Confucianism and, together with The Great Learning, The Doctrine of the Mean, and The Analects, is collectively known as the Four Books. Mencius, named Meng Ke, was a politician, thinker, and educator during the Warring States period. He is one of the most important representatives of Confucianism, second only to Confucius in status, and is honored as the Second Sage (Ya Sheng).
孟子，名轲，战国时期的政治家、思想家、教育家。儒家最重要的代表人物之一，地位仪次于孔子，被尊封为亚圣。
Mencius is one of the most prominent representatives of the Confucian school. He inherited and developed the doctrines of Confucius, and was posthumously honored as the Second Sage (Ya Sheng), with Confucius and Mencius collectively referred to as Kong-Meng. His work, the Mencius, consists of seven chapters divided into fourteen volumes, and is one of the Four Books (Sishu). Its rich content covers diverse fields including politics, philosophy, ethics, economics, education, literature, and the arts, exerting a profound and lasting influence on later generations.
This edition takes as its primary source Jiao Xun's Mencius Zhengyi (The Correct Meaning of Mencius), as collected in the Zhuzi Jicheng (Collectanea of Masters) published by Zhonghua Book Company. Specialists have been invited to produce this edition, fully incorporating and drawing upon the latest research achievements of both past and present scholars. It provides annotations for difficult words and phrases, as well as allusions and proper nouns; offers complete translations of each passage; and supplies an introductory commentary for each chapter summarizing its main theme.
