常有人说，历史是胜利者书写的。
对独裁社会来说，这确是事实。统治者需要垄断真理解释权，也需要垄断历史解释权。要不，他们总觉得不安全。
今年，是中国共产党建党100年，中共执政也已经70余年。但看来，这个老毛病仍然没有改。共产党建党被说成开天辟地。第一次国共合作失败，则被归结为蒋介石叛变革命，投靠了帝国主义和大资产阶级。
这些，当然是典型的党国史观。已经教导了几代中国人。
然而，中国总是要往前走的。
中国的文化建设应该和中国的民主化并配而行。
文化建设就包括重审中国近现代史和中国当代史。要重新梳理一些被埋没、被扭曲的史实，也要重新建构更合理、更科学的史观。
本书就是为这个目的而作。
这本小册子的内容取自笔者正在写作的《从五四到六四：20世纪中国专制主义批判》（6卷本）的第二卷第九章。考虑到全书出版尚需时日，而这一章主题集中，自成系统，为公众之所需，12万字的篇幅又正好满足一本小册子的容量，所以决定拎出这一章先行出版。书中详细讨论了第一次国共合作的缘起、合作中的冲突、为什么最后会走向分裂。我的基本结论是：共产国际和中共的激进阶级革命战略与国民党温和的阶级调和战略不相容，是导致1924 1927年国共合作失败的根本原因，蒋介石四一二清党不过是这个冲突演变的结果而已。这个过程跌宕起伏，惊心动魄，充满了戏剧性。且目前占有的资料（包括共产国际的原始档案、共产党重要领导人的回忆、国民党方面的材料特别是蒋介石本人日记）已经让研究者可以较为准确地重新描述这段历史，并发现背后的真实逻辑。
为了方便阅读，笔者设计了一些新的小标题，全书也分为上下两篇，结构匀称。希望这本小册子对读者理解那段历史有所帮助。
