Dragged from their disastrous westward hunt for a phantom peak in the Jagged Tooth mountains, scholar Ethan Kane and Captain Rourke's battered expedition are violently rerouted by their ruthless, obsessive patron, Julien Devereaux. New, cryptic orders, born from Devereaux's own fevered reinterpretations of Solakari lore, send them eastward into the ancient mountains and misty valleys of the Cherokee Nation in Tennessee. Their new objective: the Solakari Heartstone, an artifact Devereaux believes is the next key to an unimaginable treasure, supposedly hidden near the sacred town of Chota or along the Tellico River.

As they venture into these ancestral lands around 1820-1821, a period fraught with tension as the shadow of Indian Removal looms, they find a nation grappling with encroachment and fear. Their arrival coincides with fresh tragedy: a sacred mound site, deeply revered by the Cherokee, has been brutally desecrated, and a respected elder and wisdom keeper, Yonaguska, has vanished from the site after confronting the defilers. Suspicion immediately falls upon a shadowy U.S. military officer, Major Elias Thorne, who has been seen in the territory, aggressively seeking information about old trails, mineral rights, and Native sacred places.

Ethan and his companions are soon confronted by the fierce and intelligent Anawa, Yonaguska's kin. Distrustful of all outsiders but desperate to find her grand-uncle and uncover the truth behind the sacrilege, Anawa issues a challenge: if they are truly scholars and not mere plunderers like Thorne, they will aid her. A tense, uneasy alliance is formed, leading Ethan, Rourke, the still-zealous Moreau, and a handful of their men on a perilous pursuit of Thorne's party, guided by Anawa's intimate knowledge of the mountain wilderness. After a violent confrontation, Yonaguska is rescued, and the immediate threat of Major Thorne is neutralized.

With Yonaguska safe, the true nature of the Heartstone is revealed. It is not a Solakari gem of worldly power, but a sacred Cherokee river stone, holding the ancestral memories and spiritual guidance of the First People - perhaps the very Solakari whom Devereaux seeks. When Anawa sings a song of reverence, the stone glows with an inner light, unveiling a cryptic vision: a westward path, away from the Cherokee highlands, towards where the sun sleeps on water.
