What do we talk about when there isn't much time left?
The Chaplain's Chair: Conversations at the Edge of Life is a deeply human novel about the conversations that emerge when time grows short-and the questions about life, love, faith, forgiveness, and meaning that many of us spend a lifetime avoiding.
Thomas Vale has spent years sitting beside people approaching the end of life. As a hospice chaplain, he enters their lives carrying no medicine, no treatment plan, and no promise that everything will be all right. What he brings is his presence, his faith, and a willingness to enter conversations that are sometimes difficult, sometimes unexpected, and often deeply personal.
The people Thomas encounters are as different as the lives they have lived. Some are surrounded by family. Others carry broken relationships, old regrets, unanswered questions, or words they have waited too long to say. Some have strong faith. Some struggle with doubt. Some need forgiveness, while others must decide whether they can offer it.
Thomas listens, but he also asks the hard questions. Through these encounters, patients and families confront mortality, reconciliation, second chances, grace, and what it means to have lived a meaningful life. Thomas does not always have the answers, and he does not always get it right. Sometimes the right question opens a conversation. Sometimes listening is enough. Sometimes something needs to be said. And sometimes the most important thing he can do is pull up a chair and stay.
Inspired by the author's years of experience in chaplaincy, The Chaplain's Chair explores death without losing sight of life. It is a story about human connection, the relationships we carry with us, the things we wish we had done differently, and the possibility that even near the end, there may still be time for forgiveness, reconciliation, faith, and hope.
For readers drawn to emotionally resonant, thought-provoking fiction about family, faith, mortality, second chances, and the experiences that give a human life meaning.
