Your kid just threw a fistful of trail mix at their sibling. Someone needs the bathroom right now. The toilet paper is in the car, which is parked a quarter mile back down the trail.
Ten years from now, that's the story they'll tell at Thanksgiving. With love.
The Chaos Is the Point is a practical, funny, deeply honest guide to camping with kids at every stage - from the infant who doesn't know they're outside yet, to the thirteen-year-old who planned the four-day backpacking trip themselves and is quietly better at this than you are.
What's inside
- Three complete sections - backyard camping, car camping, and backpacking - each broken down by age group (infant through pre-teen), so you go straight to what you actually need
- The Ladder approach - a deliberate on-ramp system that builds skills and confidence one trip at a time, so no one gets in over their head
- Honest, verified gear advice - what to buy, what to skip, what to look for when specific products inevitably change
- Age-by-age packing lists, campfire recipes, Leave No Trace guidance, and a quick-reference matrix for when you just need a fast answer
- Field reports from real trips - including the one where a ranger showed up with a flashlight at 9 p.m. to check on us
Who this is for
Parents who used to camp before kids arrived and want to find their way back. Parents who have never camped and have been told it would be good for everyone. Parents currently sitting in a tent wondering why they thought this was a good idea. All of you belong here.
This guide won't promise you perfect trips. It will give you enough practical knowledge that when things go sideways - and they will - you're adapting instead of scrambling. There's a difference between a hard trip and a bad trip, and that difference is almost always preparation.
The woods are waiting. Your kids are going to love it, eventually. The chaos is the point.
