What happens when a camera no longer takes pictures? In the hands of Hong Kong artist Chan Suk On, it begins to reveal an entirely new world.
Loose Pieces presents a compelling exploration of memory, transformation, and the hidden beauty of mechanical objects. Trained in photographic design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and fine arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Chan has developed a distinctive practice that moves from documentary photography toward conceptual art. Her work begins with curiosity. By opening old cameras, loosening their screws, and examining the intricate components concealed within, she uncovers unexpected forms that possess their own character, rhythm, and visual power.
Gears become eyes and mouths. Camera bodies become sculptural structures. Shutter blades, screws, and fragments are carefully rearranged into images that feel playful, mysterious, and deeply sentimental. Her father's Canon EOS 88, stored for more than twenty years, becomes both artistic material and a vessel of personal memory.
Through dramatic lighting, geometric compositions, and carefully integrated shadows, Chan transforms cold aluminum and magnesium parts into surreal visual puzzles. Shadows become subjects in their own right, creating a dialogue between reality and illusion. Her inventive use of discarded camera components, glass bottles, and other everyday materials also reflects a thoughtful commitment to sustainability, placing her work between photography, sculpture, art, and design.
For Chan, creation is a journey into the unknown, while art offers healing, spirituality, and the freedom to see familiar objects differently. Loose Pieces invites readers to look beyond function, discover beauty within imperfection, and enter an imaginative world where forgotten fragments are given new meaning. Open these pages and experience the extraordinary possibilities hidden inside the ordinary.
