Drawing on 16th-century accounts from Portuguese, French, and German sources, Böhnke reconstructs the political organization of Tupinambá society before its destruction through European colonization. Through meticulous research, Böhnke demonstrates how the Tupinambá maintained autonomous villages while forming confederacies capable of mobilizing thousands of warriors.
