At a fictional ambulance station above Looe, Cornwall, every shift begins with bad coffee, black humour and the uneasy hope that tonight might be quiet. It rarely is.
Mick Trelawney has more than twenty years on the road and a problem his crewmates can no longer laugh away. Neil Penrose, former submariner and station stalwart, follows every rule and claims every minute of overtime. Rachel Kershaw hides sharp humour, old scars and a remarkable secret. Sophie and Dan Mercer are the inseparable lead paramedics who somehow always seem to make the rules work in their favour. And rookie Emergency Care Assistant Claire Prowse is desperate to prove she belongs - even if she reports half the station along the way.
From apparently ridiculous call-outs and drunken arguments to violent patients, assaults on staff, devastating road collisions, frightened children, lonely elderly patients and the relentless pressure of long hospital handovers, the crews of Polvellan see Cornwall at its funniest, saddest and most vulnerable.
Between Looe, Polperro, Liskeard, Torpoint, Saltash, Derriford and Treliske, twelve-hour shifts become fourteen, personalities clash, friendships are tested and some calls refuse to be left behind when the uniform comes off.
Funny, raw and at times heartbreaking, The Calls We Carry is the first novel in the Polvellan Ambulance series - a story about the ordinary people carrying extraordinary amounts of other people's lives.
Written by a former serving paramedic.
