Ten years ago, Hector Heck Collins failed to solve a murder. He's been living with the consequences ever since.
Once a military police investigator, Heck now works security at Pandora's Box, a Toronto strip club where the nights are loud, the clientele questionable, and nobody asks too many questions about the man with the eyepatch.
Then his former partner brings him to a murder scene.
A woman has been strangled, mutilated and carefully wrapped in blankets-the same ritual used on Gracie Telford, the soldier whose unsolved murder ended Heck's military career. The killer should be thousands of kilometres and a decade away. Instead, he may be hunting again.
With the investigation pulling Heck back toward the army and the ghosts he never escaped, dancer and aspiring journalist Hazel Abe sees what everyone else has missed: the victims aren't simply being displayed.
They're being transformed.
And somewhere in Toronto, a killer believes he isn't taking lives.
He's setting butterflies free.
