Wie entstehen Bilder? Wie entwickeln sich Bilder in ihrer Frühzeit, in der Onto- wie in der Phylogenese? Sind frühe Bilder durchgängig von einer einzelnen Kultur bestimmt, oder weisen sie kulturübergreifende Eigenheiten auf? Steht die Entwicklung von Bildern in einer Beziehung zur ihrer möglichen Degeneration? - Sind Bilder Zeichen, oder sind sie nur als Eigenständige zu bestimmen? - Worauf lässt uns das Nachdenken über Musik und Tanz, und worauf das Nachdenken über die Form ganz allgemein in Hinsicht auf die Frühzeit von Bildern aufmerksam werden?
Im Jahre 2007 fand an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ein Symposium mit dem Titel Bild und Bildgenese statt. Die am Symposium gehaltenen Referate liegen nun als überarbeitete Aufsätze in diesem Sammelband vor. Sie weisen einerseits auf die Notwendigkeit hin, das Genetische von Bildern als einen erstrangigen Aspekt des Bildhaften selbst zu bedenken, und versuchen andererseits, die Frage der Bildgenese in eine breite Erörterung von Form, Ästhetik und symbolischem Ausdruck einzubetten.
