Harry Lowe, a young pilot, veers from his path seeking an airline job after a fatal crash changes his life. His tortuous journey from there takes him to Lisbon, Portugal, and a company delivering lifesaving aid into war-torn Biafra, a break-off country struggling in the midst of the Nigerian civil war. After a quick rating in one of the company's ancient Lockheed Constellations, Harry becomes a captain on the Biafra run. In Lisbon, the airplanes are stuffed to the limits with what are euphemistically called relief supplies but is mostly lethal armament. The goods are flown to Sao Tome, an island 300 miles south of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and then into a rough-hewn airstrip inside of Biafra. A Russian-supplied, Ilyushin fighter jet of the Nigerian Air Force puts an end to his airplane one night, while in Biafra, and Harry decides to join the war on its terms, in-country. Eventually, with the goading of a gristled CIA agent, Harry winds up in the enemy camp trying to comprehend his next move. The story takes many turns, weaving through surprising subplots, as it runs headlong to its conclusion. This is a fast-paced story of action, adventure, human drama, and humor, for all readers, but with a heavy dose of airplanes that every pilot or aviation fan will love.
