Private Thomas Aldridge is standing watch on a cold rise in the Nevada Territory when he sees the shape on the ridgeline. Nine feet tall. Still as the stone it stands on. Thirty yards below, six men he has served beside all year are laughing around a good fire. Thomas covers those thirty yards in under a minute. It is not enough. It is never going to be enough, and he will go on covering them every night for the next eight years.
The report he files is accurate in every particular, and no one believes it. The official record says Paiute activity. The truth says something the United States Army has no container for.
Four kilometers below the plateau lies Vel-Duurath, a civilization that has never seen the sky. Its people fled a dying world three million years ago and never came back, and the dark remade them: massive, armored, patient, speaking to one another through the tremor of the rock itself. Their greatest war leader, Khorr, has run out of options. A rival named Rawhljek is starving his clan of forty-two thousand out of existence, and the old tales say there is a world above the rock that once belonged to them. So Khorr goes up, not as a conqueror, but as a man with nowhere left to go.
What follows is a war neither side chose and neither side can stop. It is also, in secret, something else.
Across nine years at a forgotten frontier fort, a soldier who will not stop telling the truth, an aging professor nobody in Washington takes seriously, and an engineer who builds a machine to listen to stone assemble the most dangerous thing in the territory: a conversation. Letter by letter, through four kilometers of rock, Thomas and Khorr begin writing to each other beneath a war they are both still fighting. They trade warnings. They trade the names of their dead. They trade the names of their children.
Then Rawhljek opens a door of his own, and the whole country learns what is underneath it.
Beneath the Ancient Dark is a sweeping alternate history of the American West, an epic of first contact where the strangers were never alien, only separated, and a study of the hardest work two peoples can do: keep talking while the killing continues.
